Long-Term Care Workforce
One of the most pressing challenges facing Ukrainians newly arriving in Minnesota is securing stable employment. The UACCMN has identified the Long Term Care (LTC) industry as a key area in which Ukrainian refugees can find gainful employment and make meaningful contributions.
The LTC industry provides services to meet a person’s health or personal care needs when they can no longer perform everyday activities on their own. Our LTC Workforce Program is designed to equip refugees with the skills and knowledge necessary to secure stable employment in LTC, which is in high demand in Minnesota. The program offers a structured pathway that includes language support, vocational training, mentorship, and job placement services.
How the Program Works
The program is structured into several key components to ensure that refugees receive the support they need at every stage of their journey:
- Initial Assessment and Enrollment: Refugees interested in the LTC Workforce Program begin by attending an informational session at the UACCMN. During this session, they learn about the program’s offerings, eligibility requirements, and the commitment involved. After the session, participants undergo an initial assessment to determine their language proficiency, educational background, and previous work experience. This assessment helps tailor the program to each individual's needs.
- Language and Cultural Training: For many Ukrainian refugees, the language barrier is one of the most significant challenges. To address this, the program offers customized English language classes focused on the terminology and communication skills needed in the LTC field. Additionally, cultural orientation workshops help participants understand the workplace norms and expectations in the United States, which can differ significantly from those in Ukraine.
- Vocational Training: Once participants have a sufficient grasp of English, they can enroll in vocational training programs specifically geared toward long-term care careers. These training programs cover essential skills such as patient care, medical terminology, and basic healthcare practices. The training is often provided in partnership with local educational institutions and healthcare providers, ensuring that participants receive recognized certifications upon completion.
- Mentorship and Support Services: Each participant is paired with a mentor who has experience in the LTC field. Mentors provide guidance, answer questions, and help participants navigate the challenges of starting a new career in a foreign country. Additionally, the UACCMN offers support services such as childcare, transportation assistance, and help with securing housing, ensuring that participants can focus on their training without being overwhelmed by other responsibilities.
- Job Placement and Ongoing Support: After completing their training, participants receive job placement assistance. The UACCMN works closely with local long-term care facilities, including Fairview Health Services and Ebenezer Senior Living, to identify job opportunities that match the participants' skills and qualifications. The program also provides ongoing support after placement, including additional training opportunities and resources for career advancement.
How Refugees Can Access the Program
Ukrainian refugees interested in the Long-Term Care Workforce Program can follow these steps to get started:
- Attend an Informational Session: The first step is to attend an informational session at the UACCMN, where program details, benefits, and requirements will be explained. These sessions are held regularly, and participants can register in advance through the UACCMN’s website or by visiting the center in person.
- Complete an Initial Assessment: After the informational session, interested participants will undergo an assessment to determine their language skills, educational background, and previous work experience. This step is crucial for tailoring the program to meet the specific needs of each participant.
- Enroll in Language and Vocational Training: Based on the assessment results, participants will be enrolled in the appropriate language and vocational training courses. These courses are designed to be flexible and accommodating to the needs of refugees, with options for evening and weekend classes.
- Participate in Mentorship and Support Programs: Once enrolled in the training, participants will be paired with a mentor and gain access to the UACCMN’s comprehensive support services. This ensures that they have the guidance and resources needed to succeed.
- Job Placement and Career Development: Upon completing the training, participants will work with the UACCMN’s job placement team to find employment in the LTC sector. The center will continue to provide support even after job placement to help participants advance in their careers and achieve long-term stability.
Building a Supportive Community
The success of the LTC Workforce Program at the UACCMN is rooted in the center's deep commitment to building a supportive and inclusive community. The UACCMN's approach is guided by the principles of cultural competence, empathy, and mutual respect. The center's staff and volunteers are not only fluent in both Ukrainian and English but also have a deep understanding of the cultural and emotional needs of Ukrainian refugees.
The UACCMN's efforts to build a supportive community extend beyond the walls of the center. The organization actively engages with local Ukrainian churches and other community organizations to amplify its message of unity and support. By fostering connections among refugees and creating a sense of belonging, the UACCMN helps new arrivals navigate the challenges of resettlement and build a new life in Minnesota.
